Crayola have a Beauty Brand? Crayola ‘Color Crayon Trio’ Review

Hello and Welcome!

I can safely say that this is a post that I never, ever, envisioned writing. As you can tell from the title, Crayola, yes the crayon company, have launched a beauty brand. Whilst I’m absolutely shook to the core about this launch, when I think about it, it is quite smart. Everyone knows the brand, beauty is a massive industry, you do art with crayons (okay well maybe not everyone uses Crayola crayons, but still), makeup is an art. It’s a smart move. However, still not something that I ever thought I’d be reviewing.

When I posted a picture of me wearing one of these crayons, and holding it, it’s safe to say that everyone reacted in the same way that I did when my friend Rhiannon told me about the brand. It can be pretty much summed up with the following:

Needless to say, I’m excited. So let’s get into what I bought, what Crayola beauty is, and my thoughts on the products!

I bought a set of three lip and cheek crayons from ASOS a couple of days ago. I chose the ‘Wild Fruits’ ‘Color Crayon Trio’ as it was filled with red toned shades, and I thought I’d get the most use out of it. The lip and cheek crayons separately cost £9.00, but this set of 3 was £18.00 (meaning you effectively get one for free). It does say that this set is limited edition, but I’m not sure if it says that on all the sets.

What is Crayola Beauty?

As you probably will have guessed, Crayola beauty is brought to you by the makers of Crayola.

The description on the ASOS website is:

‘Crayola has only gone and launched a range of makeup based on its colourful wax crayons, and our inner child is beyond excited. Celebrating individuality and self-expression, the brand’s ultra-creamy, multipurpose face crayons are great for blending and experimenting – who cares if you colour outside the lines?’

They launched a whopping 58 products, including eyeshadow palettes, lip palettes, face crayons, lip and cheek crayons, highlighters, mascaras, and a brush set. Even more impressively, the face crayons come in 95 different shades – there’s certainly something for everyone!

The brand also is vegan and cruelty free, as well as Talc free.

Anyone who has seen, or had, a Crayola crayon, will know that these are packaged in exactly the same way as them.

The box is yellow and green with the brand name at the top, product name and weight in the middle and name of this particular set, as well as each individual crayon name, at the bottom. This set contains the shades (from left to right) ‘Strawberry’ ‘Mango Tango’, and ‘Very Cherry’.

I honestly adore the packaging, I think it’s really cute, nostalgic, and distinctive. You could remove the brand name completely, ask people to guess what brand made it, and they’d probably know.

10/10 on the packaging, I love that they stuck with the Crayola brand – they could have tried to make it different, but I’m very glad that they didn’t.

I can’t wait to use one of these out in public and watch people’s faces if they don’t know that Crayola now do beauty too.

On the back of the box, the product has the following description:

‘A collection of three lip and cheek crayons with a soft and spreadable texture that blends easily, leaving the lips & cheeks silky and smooth, with a rich and powerful pay-off’

I will get into whether this description is accurate later in the review.

This was definitely one of the ones that I was most excited for. I’m pretty sure I had clicked on this one and looked at purchasing it, before I found this set of 3.

I really love the way this looks and the pigmentation blew me away. This colour comes out this intense in one swipe, you don’t need to layer at all and it’s beautiful. It doesn’t drag on your lips at all as it’s extremely creamy, and I found that the crayon shape really helped with lining my lips – it’s basically like a big lip liner.

I don’t have anything bad to say about this colour, or the formula, the only thing is that I wish it smelt like strawberry! It does have a slightly sweet scent, but I wouldn’t say that it’s strawberry. Also in terms of the smell, it isn’t very strong and I didn’t notice it at all when the product was applied, so if you’re sensitive to smell you should be fine with these.

Mango Tango

This was probably my least favourite from the set. Online it looked very shimmery, and it does have a slight shimmer in real life. The formula for this one is completely different to the other two, and isn’t as creamy. I assume that this is because of the glitter in the product. However, it still applies nicely.

The pigmentation on this one also isn’t as strong and I think this would look best layered on top of another lipstick, rather than alone. Whilst it still does look good by itself, if you’re looking for a subtle wash of colour, I do think it would perform better as a lip topper.

Very Cherry

This is the colour that I posted myself wearing on my Instagram and I absolutely adore it. It’s definitely more of a vampy red than ‘Strawberry’, that comes off more as a true red. Personally, I love colours like this and this one is no exception to that.

Like the ‘Strawberry’ shade, this one is extremely creamy and pigmented. I did find that it required a little extra layering, but hardly anything really, just a little touch up here and there. Again I found the shape of the crayon made it extremely easy to line my lips. I sometimes find with colours like this that it’s hard to get a good lip shape without using a liner first, but I had absolutely no issues with this.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I really love these and I would definitely recommend them. The packaging and attention to detail is fantastic, the vast shade range is amazing, and the formula and pigmentation of these lip and cheek crayons is honestly incredible. I do think that £9.00 is slightly expensive for these, but if you find a set that you like, you effectively get one for free, so I think that is better value.

I typically like a matte, long wearing, transfer-proof lipstick so if you like the same then these may not be for you. Due to how creamy they are, they do transfer. However, this also means that they aren’t drying on your lips at all (my pet hate is overly dry lipsticks). I ate two pain au chocolat and the lipstick did take a big hit. However, I didn’t eat in a particularly dainty way, so I’m sure if you didn’t shovel food into your face, then they would hold up better.

I will definitely be reaching for these again and am very interested in trying out their face crayons!

If you would like to try these out then you can pick up the set for £18.00 here, or the crayons individually here for Strawberry, here for Mango Tango, and here for Very Cherry.

So this brings us to the end of this review on the Crayola Beauty ‘Color Crayon Trio’! I really hope that you enjoyed reading this post, as much as I enjoyed trying out these products. If you did then, as always, please leave a like on this post. I’d be very interested to hear if you’ve tried any products from this range so leave a comment if you have. If you think that you’ll enjoy reading my blog in the future then be sure to follow me, I post at least twice a week!

Also, if you see any beauty products that you think are odd (and are cruelty free) then please DM me with them on Instagram – I love trying new things, especially when they’re out of the box.

      1. You need staying power from face products don’t you, not the end of the world if lippy fades but don’t want bronze or blush sliding off the face! x

Yeah very true! I don’t tend to ever use cream eye products either as you have to set them, so I think that’s part of the issue with the face crayons xx

  7. So glad to see someone review these! I’ve been thinking about purchasing a few, but I wasn’t sure if it would be more gimmicky than anything. The colors look so pretty–I especially like strawberry. I’d be curious to know what some of the more vibrant blues and greens look like. Thanks for sharing!
